Ryan Cleary, 19, was arrested at his family home in Essex in the dramatic events after a joint investigation by Scotland Yard and the FBI.
He was arrested several hours after the serious crimes unit of the British attacked online by hacking group known as LulzSec. The group recently declared on Twitter intention to enter the site the government and banks as well as leaking confidential documents.
On Monday, June 20, 2011, organized Serious Crime Agency - dubbed the British FBI - were forced to make its site off-line after hackers bombarded.
Ryan, who is described as a loner, faces possible extradition to the United States where he could face 60 years in prison for allegedly hacking the CIA and the Senate website.
Detectives believe he is a major player with LulzSec, which has been linked to recent attacks on the company's Sony games in which details of millions of users and passwords to access.
LulzSec have claimed other victims, including the NHS and Nintendo.
Ryan's mother, Rita, 44, said her son suffered from agoraphobia and attention deficit disorder and did not leave his home for four years.
He said that Ryan almost never leaves his room consisting of a computer with two monitors, refrigeration units, broken TVs, and a double bed.
