Manufacturers of Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Seagate and Western Digital (WD) is planning to cut its product warranty period of five years to one year only. According to the manufacturer's storage media giant, it had to be done to save expenses.
Trimming the warranty period is much shorter Seagate will begin on December 31, while the new Western Digital will initiate action on January 2. While the HDD that shipped before that date, it will get a 5 year warranty.
Seagate argues that the plan to reduce the warranty period, as a way to standardize the term "To be more consistent with the commonly applied throughout the consumer electronics industry and technology."
"By aligning with current industry standards, Seagate can continue to focus investment on technological innovation and the unique product features that drive value for our customers," the company said, as reported by Computer World, Tuesday (20/12/2011).
In other words, Seagate can redirect money previously spent on 'maintaining' warranty, to invest in product development.
Seagate warranty period applicable to the internal hard drives designed for laptops, desktops and consumer electronics devices. Seagate said there was no change in the HDD warranty for businesses, such as the Cheetah family.
Seagate said it is reducing the warranty period from five years to three years for nearline products, such as the Constellation series 2. Even the new hybrid drive Seagate, Momentus XT, is looking at 5-3 year warranty period is cut.
In a more radical step, Seagate's warranty policy will also change from five years to one year for a particular desktop and notebook hard drives, such as the Barracuda and Green drives Barracuda and Momentus 3.5in 2.5in (5400 and 7200rpm).
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Western Digital said the company is "constantly evaluating the best mix of product features and services that benefit our overall customer base."
