PARIS - Scientists bring a bit of good news about global warming. Turned out to be surprisinglycapable of absorbing the effects of global warmingcarbon dioxide (CO2), or often called greenhouse gases.
Approximately four percent of the world's land surface is urban. Human population on the planetunderwent a very significant jump, from sevenbillion to 9.5 billion by mid-century.
Unlike the forests, urban areas are always absentin the calculation of most of the 'absorption' in which the vegetation that serves to absorb CO2 is naturally thanks to the process of photosynthesis.
As quoted by the Straits Times, Tuesday(12/07/2011), a new study, said, "The contributionof the effects of global warming could affect thecarbon sequestration in urban areas."
British scientists conducted a survey in centralEngland, in Leicester, which has a population of 300,000 people and an area of 73 sq. km. They measured the carbon sequestration capacity of parks, domestic gardens, golf courses, schoolplaying fields, roadside and river banks are exposed to the effects of global warming.
They found that 231,000 tonnes of carbon can be absorbed in this way, is 10 times more than expected. This is roughly equal to the averageannual emissions from 150,000 cars sedan.
"Currently, some land in the UK have consideredurban, biological carbon density was assumed tobe zero," says researcher Zoe Davies from the University of Kent, southeast England.
"Our study illustrates that this is not the core of the problem but there is a large pool of carbon locked up in vegetation in the city," he concluded
